TORONTO — Mike Field Enterprises is developing SIGNAL, a multi-agent AI system designed to explore how specialized AI agents can work together within a structured software engineering workflow.
Rather than relying on a single general-purpose AI assistant, SIGNAL separates responsibilities among specialized Codex agents for dispatching, software development, security, quality assurance, review, and deployment analysis. The agents operate within a dependency-driven workflow in which work can move through development, parallel review, rework, final review, and deployment preparation.
The system combines agentic AI with conventional software-engineering controls. Different agents operate with role-specific permissions and sandbox boundaries, while human approval gates retain control over consequential actions. Jira workflows and issue transitions provide project-state integration, while GitHub and GitHub Actions connect the agent workflow with source control and CI/CD automation.
SIGNAL also provides real-time visibility into the individual agents through a tmux-based interface, making the activity of the multi-agent system observable rather than hiding the entire process behind a single conversational interface.
The project reflects an important direction in applied AI: moving beyond standalone chatbots toward agentic AI systems that can use tools, coordinate specialized roles, interact with existing engineering infrastructure, and operate within explicit governance boundaries.
SIGNAL is being developed as both a practical engineering system and an exploration of how AI agents can augment established software-development processes without removing human oversight.
